Botox 101: Everything to Know Before Your First Appointment

Your First Botox Appointment Should Start With a Conversation

If you have never had Botox before, you probably have questions.

Will I still look like myself?

Will my face look frozen?

How many units do I need?

How long does it take?

And perhaps the most important question:

Is Botox even the right treatment for what I am noticing?

At GlowMD, those questions should come before treatment.

A first appointment is an opportunity for Dr. Omerine Aseh to understand your concerns, evaluate your facial anatomy and movement, discuss your medical history, and learn what kind of result you actually want.

What Does Botox Actually Address?

Botox is a neuromodulator that temporarily reduces selected muscle activity.

It is commonly discussed for dynamic lines created or emphasized by repeated facial movement, including:

  • Forehead lines

  • Frown lines between the brows

  • Crow's feet around the eyes

But simply having a line does not tell your provider exactly how it should be treated.

Your facial anatomy and the way your muscles move are individual.

That is why Dr. O may ask you to raise your eyebrows, frown, smile, squint, and then relax your face.

What Happens During Treatment?

If Botox is appropriate and you decide to move forward, your treatment plan is developed around the areas being addressed and your goals.

The injections themselves are generally brief.

You may feel small pinches at the treatment points. Your provider will explain what to expect and provide appropriate aftercare instructions.

One of the most important things to understand is that more treatment is not automatically better treatment.

The objective is not necessarily to erase every expression.

For many GlowMD patients, preserving natural movement and facial character is an important part of the conversation.

When Will You Notice Results?

Botox does not reach its full effect immediately.

Changes develop gradually after treatment, and individual responses vary.

Your provider will explain the expected timeline and when follow-up may be appropriate.

This is also why scheduling Botox the day before an important event is generally not the same as scheduling a facial.

Treatment planning should include timing.

Will Botox Make Me Look Frozen?

This is one of the questions we hear most often.

The answer depends significantly on treatment planning, dosing, anatomy, and the result being pursued.

Tell your provider what matters to you.

If maintaining visible expression is important, say so.

If you are looking for subtle softening rather than dramatic change, that should be part of the plan from the beginning.

Questions Worth Asking at Your First Appointment

Consider asking:

What are you seeing when you assess my facial movement?

Which areas would you prioritize?

Is there anything you would not treat?

What should I realistically expect?

How should I plan for follow-up?

A thoughtful consultation should leave you understanding more about your face and your options, even if you decide not to have treatment that day.
